So the easy part was going down to my local Recreation Centre, just to check out the facilities and get a feel for the environment. It is literally just down the street from me; 2 mins. by car. It has more than what I could ever take advantage of – the gym with all kinds of machines, the weight room, exercise classes, yoga, squash courts, swimming pool, and an ice rink. The next easy part was getting out my credit card and paying. It is city owned so it is cheap, so really! The hard part – getting up the next morning and making the effort to go. But surprisingly, once I got there, it wasn’t so bad. So I went back again, and again and now have been there 6 times. It gets easier each time to get up in the morning and go. And a couple of times in the afternoon on my day off. Definitely more easy than hard, so I don’t know why I didn’t do this sooner.
I’m really not much of a gym person, but I am finding that I am really enjoying it there. I don’t even do many of the options, just mainly the treadmill, the elliptical, maybe the rowing machine and the pool – oh, and the sauna!
But what I finding is that I am inspired just by the energy in the room. It’s almost like I could get into anyone else. Even if I don’t do much, as Dr. Mandy Wintink has said to me in the past, “even doing a little, is more than what I was doing before”. So whether I spend 15 mins or 30 mins on the treadmill, it is still worthwhile and no one cares or knows except me.
But it is more than just getting my body healthy and fit. Just being there is good for my mind, too! When I am there, I am spending less time thinking about work or where my life is going or not going, or worrying about things that I can’t control. It’s like being in another world. Work has been a real energy drainer for me lately and I find that the more I look after my health, the more energy I have and the more desire I have to not just cope with life, but to actually thrive; to get out and do things, meet people and go places.
For the last number of years I have developed a passion for eating healthily and am pretty committed to it. Exercise just makes sense to compliment that. I want to have energy and desire to do all the things I dream of doing!
